QUESTIONS Submit an Altar
My altar in its last incarnation. Things tend to be in threes, and being a priest of Hecate knives, dogs, lights, etc, feature highly. The knife is a Polish commando dagger which she wanted me to buy in an antique shop: I didn’t know until I had it but it’s ironic she wanted a knife specifically designed for transitional moments. The tissue in a freezer bag contains a DNA sample lover boy left behind when he thought it would be a good idea to steal my laptop. Not such a good idea.
I had a really long day at work, piled on top of a really long week at work (which is due to get even longer). When I came home, the bowl I bought as Khonsu’s official libation bowl was waiting for me. It’s even more beautiful in person, I really can’t do it justice in pictures.
So of course, after settling in, I tucked into a beer and began cleaning and rearranging. I removed everything to dust. I washed my statue of Khonsu. I polished the dresser my shrine is on from top to bottom. I redid the layout of the main offering plate and adjusted the whole set-up so that the Kemetic area and LL’s area look harmonious next to each other. I’m really happy with the new set up for the offering plate, I think it represents Anup and Khonsu well equally, with the more unified cup in the back as well as individual pieces on each of their sides (skull for Anup behind his candle, a moonstone & quartz behind Khonsu’s). I refreshed the libations.
But most importantly, I relaxed. I winded down from a long day, and peacefully spent an hour tending to my shrine. Maintaining things like this is incredibly relaxing and rewarding to me, and it helps in centering myself. It makes me happy. And I think that’s important in any practice.
Beltane Altar
Bit late posting these. A nice shot where you can see everything, the obligatory candlelit shot, and a shot of my mother’s engagement and wedding rings from her marriage to my father. Yes, it was a crappy marriage, yes it only lasted 9 years, but it produced my sister and I, so fuck it, they’re on my Beltane altar.
The bow thing on top of the maypole was my OH’s contribution. I felt he deserved something after he helped me with the plaiting.
My sweet little fur ball sleeping in front of my altar. Be does this often. He is actually laying on a bunch of tumbled crystals I laid out. Silly dog. (excuse how messy my altar is, we just moved so it still isnt as I want it. I think I want a desk instead of small tables on the floor because my feet fall asleep when I meditate too long lol)
Just a glimpse at my altar
It seems I am not immune to occasionally posting a photograph of my altar, apologies for my watchers who were inclined to think I’d never do such a thing…. but wait? Could it be?
Nah, it’s just my house shrine after a good cleaning and freshening up with all the blooming flowers from outside. My working altar has spirits that don’t like their vessels and homes to be photographed.
I didn’t photograph this for the purposes of “look at this altar!” but more as an example of using found objects and not things bought specifically for the notion of adding them to your space.
Everything but the little white candle holders had a prior purpose and a history of its own before ending up here and soon they might be re-purposed again. Most of the time, if you want to start an altar or shrine, the materials are right at your fingertips, you need only to stand on your head to see them.
Hopefully I’ve given some people ideas.
The Man with the Painted Face, and The Cat with the Golden Paws
I haven’t officially introduced you to these two yet, but I figured I’d share the Shrine anyways.
It has an incense burner filled with salt, a cute light purple and gold glass lucky cat figurine, two candle holders (one for each of them) and a giant painted skull I bought off Amazon or Ebay or something back in High School (now I think it’s ugly as fuck, but it works).
Outside of that? Truthfully the shrine just acts like a holding place for all our loose pennies…. Which… Is kind of fitting when you think about it!
The Red Lady.
I’m using two red glass Avon bottles, One of which is filled with Lavender infused Olive Oil; the other one is filled with Clove infused Olive Oil. Then there’s a red glass offering bowl and a red glass flower-shaped candle holder. All three of these you’ll remember form this visit to the flea market.
There’s 3 candles on the Shrine, one to represent each of her 3 aspects (love, Romance, Sexuality), plus a two wax scenters- one Sweet Pea scented and the other Vanilla scented.
I also ended up putting the two candle holders I got from my other flea market trip on the Shrine too. They’re filled with lavender flowers and a bit of Vanilla Rose Black Tea. The little necklace thing hanging off the left holder is a cartouche that says “love” in Egyptian Hieroglyphics It’s copper and nickel plated with real silver and I bought it from a company out of Egypt. Unfortunately the silver plating has come off half of it, so my partner had to stop wearing it. Until I can afford to have it repaired, it’s going on The Red Lady’s Shrine.
Then there’s a big fake red rose sitting on a red box. In the box is a clipping of my own hair.
Everything’s sitting on white lace because that’s all I had left. All in all, it’s a pretty simple Shrine and she loves it.
